Liverpool now unlikely to get Enrique from Newcastle
The Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish has been scouring the world for top-notch left-sided players to provide some service for Andy Carroll next season, and it was thought that the Newcastle defender Enrique was nailed on to arrive at Anfield this summer.
But now Alan Pardew has rejected their opening bid of £5m and told Dalglish that it will cost Liverpool at least £15m to prise the Spaniard away from St. James Park, a figure way above anything that Liverpool are prepared to pay.
Pardew has also decided to tempt Enrique into staying by giving him a massive pay rise, and Pardew is hopeful that a combination of both moves will convince Enrique to stay at Newcastle a bit longer.
Pardew said: “We have been waiting to see Enrique’s representatives, they are due here in the early part of next week,”
“We are going to make Jose a very, very good offer and we are hoping he is going to accept it.”
“We are realistic about Jose because the ball is in his court on that one, not in ours.
“He will be offered a fantastic contract here, he knows that, but still it is going to be down to his decision. I am still hopeful.”
Dalglish was hoping that Enrique would be his easiest signing of the transfer window, but now it seems he will have to find another top left back as well as the left winger that he craves.
Back to the drawing board, Kenny!
