Premier League - United's record penalty spot up for sale
The penalty spot from where Wayne Rooney fired Manchester United to their 19th league title is up for sale on eBay.
Blackburn Rovers fan Eddie Maxwell is selling the spot after the club gave him permission to dig it up at the end of the season as a new pitch is being laid at Ewood Park this summer.
"I just thought, if you don't ask, you don't get," Eddie told the Lancashire Telegraph. "They were happy for me to take it because it was all being dug up anyway."
United's hopes of wrapping up the title with one match to go were hanging by a thread as they trailed Blackburn 1-0, but Rooney's 73rd minute penalty - awarded when goalkeeper Paul Robinson took out Javier Hernandez - gave the Red Devils the point they needed.
Blackburn agreed to the unusual request because Eddie wanted to sell the turf to raise funds for his Sunday league side, King Edward Guide FC.
Council parks department worker Eddie ended up being given permission to take both the centre of the pitch and the penalty spot - and with bidding for the penalty spot alone approaching £1,500 at the time of writing, it seems that the local side are in for a hefty cash windfall.
"At first I was just thinking of taking the centre spot because any Rovers fan would be interested in that but then after the Manchester United match I wanted the penalty spot as well," explained Eddie.
"It is a piece of football history - maybe Rooney would be interested in buying it.
"I just thought this was a great way to help the club."
