Big Battle between Williamson and Taylor next season
Mike Williamson is still recovering from the broken arm he somehow picked up in the gym, that forced him to miss the last 3 games of the season.
How do you break your arm in the gym?
When one door closes, another always opens and 25 year-old local lad Steven Taylor came in and grabbed his opportunity with both hands in those final 3 games, that saw Newcatsle pick up 5 points.
Steven was somewhere near his best in central defense in those games, and of course the big thing was that he scored a goal in each of the games from set pieces.
That’s something Williamson still has to do as he still looks for his first goal in Newcastle’s colors.
If Steven can produce that form next season, it will be some duel between Mike and Steve for the other central defensive position alongside Argentine Fabricio Coloccini.
But the bad news today is that Mike is unlikely to be fit for the pre-season and could miss the US tour in July.
The 27-year-old former Wycombe Wanderers, Torquay United, Watford and Portsmouth player was acquired for a measly £1M from Pompey, peanuts, and is one of Newcastle’s best recent buys, and there’s been a few of them over the last couple of years.
The first game of the season will be on August 13, unlucky for some (Manchester United again?), and it’s not clear whether Mike will be fit for that game, and if not it will give Steven Taylor and Coloccini a head start in the new season.
Williamson told the local Newcastle press today:
“Playing alongside Colo, I’m learning things every day.” “He surprises me day in, day out with the culture he’s got and his vision.”
“He’s unbelievable and just a pleasure to play alongside.” “I know it’s a cliché, but I will still be taking every game as it comes.” “It was been a fantastic season for me.”
“The atmosphere against the likes of Sunderland and Manchester United at St James’s Park was just incredible.”
“I’ve never experienced anything like it, and it would be far-fetched to think I would experience that anywhere else.” “It’s a special club, and the fans make it.”
Stoke-born Williamson played 32 times for Newcastle last season and now has a total of 47 appearances for the Magpies.
Mike is one of our favorite Newcastle players, not only because he is a steady player who improved throughout last season, but he is also such a good lad, and has fitted in superbly at Newcastle over the last 18 months.
With Coloccini, Steven Taylor and Mike Williamson fighting it out for the two central defensive positions next season, Newcastle will not go too far wrong.
And we hope Hungarian International center-back, Tamas Kadar, can overcome his injury problems and start challenging again for a place in the back four.
Tamas had a terrible time of things last season with various injuries, as did another one of our up-and-coming top youngsters – 18 year-old Slovenian U21 International Haris Vuckic.
