Kevin Nolan considering Newcastle future after contract snub

Post  Guest on Sun Jun 05, 2011 9:16 am

Kevin Nolan is being reluctantly forced to consider his long-term future at Newcastle.

The Toon hierarchy have refused to extend his current contract at St James’ Park.

Nolan has two years remaining on his current deal and was open to extending it by a further two years.

But the club has shelved plans to discuss his contract until the end of next season leaving Nolan in complete limbo.

Sources close to the player claim he is torn apart by the situation and has never at any point contemplated leaving Tyneside.

But the uncertainty surrounding his future is now leading to increasing speculation he may reconsider his position at the club.

It comes after a week when Joey Barton has revealed that Newcastle have refused to offer him a new deal as he enters the final year of his existing deal.

Barton was prepared to take a substantial pay-cut but revealed he couldn’t sign a deal if it didn’t exist.

Toon boss Alan Pardew assured Nolan and Barton he wanted them to stay with the club.

But despite those assurances it seems that the Toon bosses are looking towards a long-term strategy of reducing wages and the average age of their squad.

Certainly it appears that any Pardew initiative to persuade the board to review their decision is falling on deaf ears and the directors are digging their heels in.

Supporters are equally baffled by the situation and have bombarded message boards criticising the club.

Nolan, who will be 29 later this month, is a popular player both inside the club and with the fans.

His team-mates appreciate the role he played in unifying the dressing-room after the club’s relegation to the Championship two years ago.

At a time of crisis he was one of the key men who rallied the troops behind then boss Chris Hughton.

His on-field leadership skills helped inspire Toon’s push for promotion back to the top flight at the first attempt and the fact that they survived in the Premier League with something to spare over the past ten months.

Nolan is also seen by his colleagues as the man to turn to for advice. The prospect of him leaving the club will shock them.

Compromise and offer him a 3 year one? To me giving him a 4 year one is pushing it slightly as he wil be 33/34, although you never know, he may still be a top performer at that age.
