US woman talks Geordie after op
AN American woman found she had a new why-aye with words when dental surgery left her speaking with a Geordie accent.
Stunned Karen Butler, 56, also picked up a slight South African twang following the op.
And her kids reckon she even has a mild Eastern European dialect that makes her sound like a VAMPIRE.
They had her record the words "I vant to suck your blood" to use as a ringtone for their mobile phones.
The change came after dentists gave mum-of-five Karen an anaesthetic called Halcion - which meant she would remember nothing of the procedure while being able to react to commands.
Karen, from Toledo, Oregon, said: "To me, I went to sleep, and when I woke up I had this accent."
She was finally diagnosed with foreign language syndrome last week.
Neurologist Dr Ted Lowenkopf believes a part of her brain controlling speech was damaged during surgery.
But Karen, who does not hear the difference herself, said: "Everything works. It just works odd."
One of the earliest recorded cases of the condition involved a Norwegian woman who was shunned for speaking with a German accent after she was hit by shrapnel during a Luftwaffe raid on Oslo in 1941.

Strange how the brain works isn't it after some kind of trauma.

How strange, do you think maybe it had something to do with a dream when she was under or something?

The thing is fruity, we are so primitive, we actually don't use our brains to any kind of capacity, but what we see, we store.Fruity wrote:How strange, do you think maybe it had something to do with a dream when she was under or something?
The only problem is, we are like a complicated learning computer in that, we put in massive amounts of information, but what we don't do, is put the stored information into brain folders for easy access and that's why when trying to recall something, we know it's there (the saying on the tip of my tongue) but we just can't find it in out b: drive.
The harder we search for it from memory, the more frustrated we get, until we give up.
Some people have the ability, to actually organise their brains (autistic people) and memory geniuses, who can logically remember everything because they either have a photographic type memory or they can categorize words and numbers and put them into a sequence in their heads for easy recall.
This woman appears to have found dialects in her subconscious and has basically mimicked them without realising.
This is one of the reasons why Id never rule out E.S.P or the ability of some people to sense things that have happened at certain places because there are over 6 billion people on the planet and the law of averages says a small percentage will be able to harness a larger proportion of their brain power.
Interesting stuff nonetheless.
