Championship - Forest sack Davies, open McClaren talks

Post  1892NUFF on Mon Jun 13, 2011 4:06 am

Nottingham Forest have sacked manager Billy Davies and opened talks with former England boss Steve McClaren.

Davies has had his contract at the City Ground terminated, bringing an end to his two-and-a-half-year tenure.

A brief statement on Forest's official website read: "Nottingham Forest have announced this afternoon that they have terminated the contract of manager Billy Davies with immediate effect.

"They have also revealed that they are now talking to Steve McClaren about the City Ground vacancy.

"The Club will be making no further comment at this stage."

The former Preston and Derby manager was unable to secure promotion to the Premier League in last season's npower Championship play-offs, falling to a 3-1 aggregate defeat to eventual winners Swansea.

The Scot joined Forest on January 1 2009, just over a year after his dismissal by Derby, spending £4million on new players at the City Ground during his first summer in charge and leading the club to an unbeaten run of 18 league games which contributed to a play-off place at the end of the 2009/10 season.

The Reds were beaten 6-4 on aggregate by Blackpool who would then clinch promotion to the top flight with victory over Cardiff at Wembley.

McClaren has most recently been linked with the vacant Aston Villa job but could be set to renew his management career in England in the Championship after mixed success with FC Twente and Wolfsburg.

I think McClaren is a better manager than he's been given credit for to be honest and Billy Davies reminds me of a spiteful whining kid lol.
