England Calling For Jak The Lad Z

Newcastle United goalkeeper Jak Alnwick has been named in the England Under-20 squad for the FIFA Under-20 World Cup, which takes place in Colombia in July and August.

The youngster, who only turned 18 earlier this month, will meet up with the rest of the squad on July 14 before travelling to Denver, Colorado in the USA for a ten-day training camp to prepare for the tournament.

The Young Lions head will then head for Medellin, in Colombia, where they will open against Korea DPR on Friday, 29th July. England will also face six-times Under-20 World Champions Argentina and Mexico in the Group F matches.

Alnwick tasted plenty of action in between the sticks for United's Reserve and Academy sides last season, and has previously represented England at Under-18 level.

And despite his tender years, England head coach Brian Eastick believes it will be a great experience which will only aid the keeper's development as he bids to forge a successful career at the top of the game.

"We are taking some of the younger players who we think have got a good chance of progressing through our system in the next few years, from the Under-19s and Under-20s, into the Under-21s and then hopefully the seniors," he explained.

"So there are a few of the younger development players in there, but it will be a tremendous experience for them to go to Colombia and play against some of the best players and teams in the world in front of some huge crowds in a completely different environment.

"They will all come back better players for that experience and I know that the staff are looking forward to it from a learning point of view as well."
