Whirlwind Support For Sir Bobby Robson Foundation
Snooker legend Jimmy 'Whirlwind' White flew into Newcastle this week - on the appropriately named flight number BE147 - to support the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation.
Jimmy's return to Tyneside came exactly a year to the day after he promised to return following a hugely successful charity night on May 26, 2010, when he played eight frames of snooker at Westfield Social Club against the highest bidders in the room.
That event raised an incredible £5,000 for the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation and Jimmy rounded off an entertaining evening by promising to come back again - and this time Tony Drago helped him to wow the crowd at Newcastle's Labour Club with entertaining exhibition snooker.
White said: "Sir Bobby was a wonderful man. I met him the once in a players' lounge and he was a true gent. As a sports fan I always appreciated his talent and decency.
"Sir Bobby fought so hard and anyone who has suffered cancer will know what a fight he put up. He was a wonderful man and it's an honour for us to be able to do whatever we can for him.
"It's wonderful to be able to support the incredible work his foundation is doing and I'm determined that this event will happen every year."
Pauline Buglass, head of fund-raising for the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation, said: "We're very appreciative of the efforts both Jimmy and Tony have made to support the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation and to Michael Sheldon for organising this charity snooker event for a second time.
"Last year it raised a £5,000 to help people fighting cancer in the North East and Cumbria and I've no doubt Sir Bobby would have been amazed by that figure.
"He often said he was humbled by the generosity of people giving to his charity and because of that ongoing support we can continue with the work he started to benefit other cancer patients in our region."
The charity snooker event was held at Newcastle Labour Club and included five frames of exhibition snooker and the presentation of the Newcastle and Gateshead Snooker League awards, before Jimmy and Tony took on all-comers.
