Newcastle United and Sunderland are ready to battle it out for Birmingham City hot shot Craig Gardner.

The North East rivals have been quick off the mark with Brum boss Alex McLeish accepting that the price he will have to pay for relegation from the Premier League is the loss of some of his top players.

And Gardner a £3million signing from neighbours Aston Villa in 2010 certainly fits into this category his 10 goals making him Birmingham’s top scorer in the season just ended.
