Man City legend Mike Doyle dies
Former Manchester City captain Mike Doyle has died at the age of 64 after suffering from liver failure.
Doyle was part of the City team which won the league title, FA Cup, European Cup Winners' Cup and the League Cup between 1968 and 1970, and skippered the side which won the League Cup again in 1976, the club's last major trophy until they won the FA Cup earlier this year.
The Manchester-born stopper made more than 550 appearances between 1962 and 1978 and won five England caps. He also turned out for Stoke City, Bolton Wanderers and Rochdale after leaving Maine Road.
Doyle's son Scott told the Manchester Evening News: “He was a great footballer, playing hundreds of games for City and England, but to me and the family he was our fantastic dad.”
Despite the club's meteoric rise over the past 12 months which has seen them win the FA Cup and qualify for the Champions League, the past year has been touched by tragedy, with former manager Malcolm Allison and cup hero Neil Young also passing away in that time.
