Fairs Cup team to meet Whitley Bay heroes
THEY'RE the teams who went down in history after they brought silverware back to Tyneside.
And now heroes from Newcastle United’s 1969 Fairs Cup-wining team and representatives from Whitley Bay Football Club, who won the FA Vase for a third time this year, will meet up at a prestigious legends’ night later this year.
More than a dozen ex-Magpies players from the 1960s and 70s were set to join forces to celebrate their historical status.
But organisers had the bright idea of inviting Seahorses’ bosses after they triumphantly brought home the FA Vase for the third consecutive time.
And the Fairs Cup lads will lay their hands on the treasured FA Vase when Whitley Bay chairman Paul McIlduff turns up with the trophy.
Newcastle’s 1969 Fairs Cup triumph over Hungarian side Ujpest Dozsa is one of the finest moments in the club’s history.
And it was the last time the black-and-whites brought home a major trophy.
Nine members of that Toon team will reunite and captain Bob Moncur, Frank Clark, Ollie Burton, Alan Foggon, Wyn Davies, Tommy Gibb, Iam McFall, Jim Scott and John McNamee will join the legends line-up.
Also joining them will be Newcastle greats Tony Green, Dave Hollins, Gordon Marshall and Ron McGarry and Glasgow Rangers’ Willie Henderson.
